Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and facial filler injections, such as Restylane®, Juvéderm™, Sculptra®, Perlane®, and Radiesse® are some of the most popular non-surgical treatments for fine facial lines and wrinkles used at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. These treatments can be used in combination with each other or with any surgical procedure such as eyelid surgery or liposuction of the neck and jowls. Our Doctors have extensive experience with facial injections, performing an average of 9,000 injections each year in Atlanta.
Botox® and recently introduced Dysport® are FDA approved for the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles for up to six months. These injectables are made from a highly purified protein that, when administered by a trained physician, can smooth our wrinkles around the eyes, furrows between the eyebrows and forehead, “smile lines” around the mouth, lines on the neck, and can correct the look of droopy eyelids caused by sagging excess skin. Botox® and Dysport® work by relaxing the surrounding muscles in the face, which not only works to correct wrinkles and fine lines, but helps prevent them from deepening further. Botox® is also FDA approved for treatment of migraine headaches, excessive sweating in the armpits, and neck and eye muscle spasms.
Restylane® is a safe, effective facial filler used to smooth out facial wrinkles and enhance and restore volume to facial areas like the lips and cheeks; it has been FDA approved since 1996. Restylane® can last 6-12 months depending on what area of the face is being treated. No skin test is required with Restylane® because it is produced from hyaluronic acid (found naturally in the skin) so there is little chance of an allergic reaction.
Perlane® is produced by the same company who makes Restylane® and is essentially the same product as Restylane® except that Perlane® has larger gel particles and thicker consistency which is designed for a deeper injection for more severe facial lines and wrinkles.
Juvéderm® is also a facial filler composed of hyaluronic acid that is approved by FDA to last up to one year. What makes Juvéderm® different than the other facial fillers is a process called Hylacross™ technology. This technology is made of smoother properties and a less granular consistency than some of the other facial fillers. Juvéderm® is commonly used to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles. Our Doctors at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta use Juvéderm® to augment the lips, cheeks, and other areas of the face that have lost volume over time. Facial lines between the nose and mouth as well as the wrinkles on and below the edges of the lips are other areas that Juvéderm® can improve.
Sculptra® is a safe, synthetic material made up of poly-L-lactic acid and is approved by the FDA for restoring lost facial volume, also known as lipotrophy. Scupltra is commonly used to restore lost volume in hollow areas of the face of people with human immunodeficiency virus. Because Sculptra® has had such a strong success rate in treating lost facial volume, Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Scott Karempelis use Sculptra® to provide a more youthful appearance in patients who have lost facial fat over time. Sculptra® normally requires multiple injections to achieve desired results, can last up to two years, and does not require any allergy tests.
Radiesse® facial filler is an FDA approved wrinkle treatment comprised of calcium based microspheres. Radiesse® is different than most facial fillers because in addition to correcting facial lines, it stimulates the body to produce collagen. Collagen is a protein of connective tissue in our body that supports our internal organs. Because Collagen diminishes with age, Radiesse® can be a good alternative. Radiesse® is biocompatible, so no allergy tests are necessary prior to your procedure.
