Beyond Skin: Treatments for the Hair and Nails
Did you know that our providers, as board-certified dermatologists and physician assistants who specialize in dermatology, are experts in not only your skin but your hair and nails as well? Your manicurist and hair stylist may be able to help you with the cosmetic side of your hair and nails, but when it comes to keeping them healthy (which lays the foundation for those great haircuts and manicures), Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) can address a wide variety of concerns.
There are many factors which can cause hair loss for both men and women, and our experts at DAA can determine the underlying cause and offer a variety of treatment options catered to your needs. In fact, two of our nine unique specialty centers are dedicated to this common concern: The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research and The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss. Depending on your specific condition, we offer customized treatment plans including hair restoration surgery, red light therapy, topical and oral medications, micro needling with natural growth factors, and more. As experts in their field, The Griffin Center has also been nominated as Atlanta’s Best Hair Restoration facility in Best Self’s Best of Atlanta contest (go to Best Self’s site before September 30th to cast your vote!).
Nail Fungus
As the most common nail disorder in the US, nail fungus occurs when a fungal infection occurs on under, or within a nail. While it can appear on fingernails or toenails, it’s much more common on the toenails. This is because the feet tend to stay more warm and moist, creating an ideal growing condition for the fungi. While it’s primarily a concern for cosmetic reasons, nail fungus can be treated with laser treatments, oral medications, or topical medications.
Psoriasis of the Nails and Scalp
As a chronic immune condition, psoriasis causes skin cells to multiply at a much higher rate than normal, which leads to patches of skin which are itchy, inflamed, dry, and scaly (called “plaques”) because they’re constantly shedding old skin cells to make way for the over-produced new cells. Each patient is affected in different areas of their body, and for some, this includes the nails and/or the scalp. At our dedicated Psoriasis Treatment Center, we can tailor a treatment plan to each patient, potentially consisting of topical treatments, specialized shampoos, phototherapy (using precise UVA or UVB light to slow the cell growth), and systemic medicines (such as pills or injections).
Dandruff (and conditions which look like dandruff)
Dandruff appears when the scalp sheds small flakes of skin cells. While straightforward dandruff can typically be treated by simply using a specialty and/or prescription shampoo, many patients think they have dandruff when in fact they have one of several other conditions which cause this similar flaking. These include certain types of dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, and fungal infections of the scalp. Our providers at DAA can determine the true cause of your flaking and recommend treatments best suited for your needs.
As our patients already know, regardless of how much makeup you wear, having healthy, beautiful skin really makes a difference in your overall look, and the same is true for your hair and nails.
