Background & Training

Originally from Panama City, Florida, Jan Buckley-Levenson is a Certified Clinical Electrologist (CCE). For anyone unfamiliar, Clinical Electrologists are medical and beauty technicians who specialize in hair removal technologies. Jan earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Troy State University and would then go on to graduate from the International Center for the Study of Electrology. She is an active member of the International Guild of Professional Electrologists. Jan was included in an early FDA study of laser hair removal in 1995 which helped lead to the treatment becoming FDA-approved the following year. This passion for hair removal led her to run one of the first hair removal centers in Atlanta at our Skin Medics™ Medical Spa.

What Lasers Can Do for You

As summer approaches and we all look forward to spending more time outdoors, we don’t look forward to spending more time shaving. That’s why long-term hair removal methods, specifically laser hair removal and electrolysis, are so popular for men and women alike. While most people have heard of both of these treatments, few people actually know the difference between the two and how to determine which one fits their needs. How They Work

Both electrolysis and laser hair removal use high-powered energy to limit or stop each hair follicle from producing hair in the future. The difference is in how they deliver that energy to the follicle. During electrolysis, an experienced certified clinical electrologist places a tiny probe into each follicle, and the energy travels through the probe into the follicle. Laser hair removal, on the other hand, actually uses the hair itself instead of the probe. The light from the laser is attracted to the dark pigment in the hair, so the energy pulls into the hair and travels down it to reach the follicle.

Versatility

One of the biggest factors in favor of electrolysis is that it’s more versatile. Laser hair removal is only effective on dark hairs. Effectiveness

Both laser hair removal and electrolysis have been used for decades as highly effective ways to keep unwanted hair away for long periods of time. For thorough laser hair removal, most people complete a series of about three to eight treatments initially, then maintain their results with a fresh treatment once or twice per year. Electrolysis often takes more initial treatments to get thorough results, but the results typically last forever without the need for maintenance treatments.

Time Commitment

We offer three primary types of hair removal treatments:

Laser hair removal uses a beam of light which is attracted to the pigment in your hair. This allows the energy to travel down the hair and into the follicle, damaging the follicle to impair future growth. We have several different types of lasers we can use, depending on your skin type.
EpiLight is very similar to laser hair removal. However, this particular device uses IPL, or intense pulsed light – the same type of light used for photo rejuvenation.
Electrolysis uses an ultrafine probe to send electrical currents into the individual hair follicles, hindering future hair growth. Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis doesn’t rely on the hair’s pigment because it delivers the energy directly into the follicles, so it’s an ideal option for patients who have very little pigment in their hair (e.g., those with blond, gray, or white hair). It’s also particularly common for fine hairs on the face.

Ask DAA: How Does my Skin Tone and Hair Color Affect my Hair Removal Treatments

The battle to control our bodies’ hair is not a new one, and for many of us, it’s a daily fight. Between shaving, waxing, threading, plucking, and other methods, removing unwanted hair can be time-consuming, pricey, inconvenient, and painful. That’s why longer-lasting hair removal treatments are so popular. Unfortunately, people all over the country stop themselves from seeking the procedure because they think it won’t work for their skin tone or hair color. So, at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA), we’re taking this opportunity to set the record straight by explaining how the color of your skin and hair affects long-term hair removal and how you can get that perpetually smooth skin regardless of your coloration.

One of the most well-known ways to achieve lasting hair removal is with laser treatments, and yes, this procedure is affected by the color of your hair. The laser light is attracted to and absorbed by the pigment in your hair, which allows the laser’s energy to travel down the hair and into the follicle. That energy damages the targeted follicle, making future hair growth difficult or impossible. Traditionally, laser hair removal has been most successful for those with light skin and dark hair – there’s more pigment to attract the laser to the hair, and the lack of pigment in the skin means less of the laser’s energy will be diverted to the skin. While this is still the case, advances in technology have made the treatment progressively safer and more effective for those with darker skin. As one of the few practices who participated in the trial testing for the first laser hair removal method and one of the most experienced laser centers in Georgia, DAA uses a specific type of laser with a longer wavelength for our darker-skinned patients.

With the appropriate group of lasers, all skin colors can be safely and effectively treated with laser hair removal, but hair color can be a different story. For patients with hair that has too little pigment to absorb the laser’s energy (like gray, white, or light blond hair), electrolysis can be an ideal option. Instead of using the hair to transport the laser’s energy into your skin, electrolysis uses a tiny metal applicator to deliver electrical impulses directly into the follicle. By destroying the individual hair follicles, electrolysis can effectively prevent hair growth.

Botox® and Dysport® are minimally invasive treatments that reduce wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Many of our male patients complain about crow’s feet and lines on their foreheads. Results typically last between four and seven months.

These FDA approved fillers are great to replump facial volume lost with age and provide a more youthful appearance. Additionally facial fillers may also be used as an ancillary treatment for facial scar reduction.
