Skin Treatment Recommendations with Ines Karempelis, PA-C
Welcome to our latest Provider of the Month blog post for July. This month, we could not be more excited to introduce the newest addition to the Dermatology Associates of Atlanta team, certified physician assistant, Ines Karempelis. A seasoned healthcare provider with years of medical training and experience under her belt, Ines brings a unique passion and innate sense of patient care to our practice. Today, we wanted to focus on some of the most common skin care conditions that Ines helps our patients with and some of her most recommended treatment options.
For Acne:
“Although acne can affect people at any age, it is commonly associated with younger people, specifically teenagers and people in their early or mid-twenties. However, some people live their entire adult lives with chronic acne or the occasional flare-up. Once I am able to determine the precise cause of a patient’s acne, I may recommend a variety of effective acne treatment methods including prescription topicals, antibiotics, deep cleaning of the pores, and more.”
For Psoriasis:
“Living with plaque psoriasis can be incredibly difficult and frustrating for people of all ages. The condition, which causes raised, inflamed, and/or scaly patches to appear on the skin, can appear on areas all over the face and body. And while psoriasis can often be challenging to treat, I have had excellent experience using the PHAROS EX-308 Excimer Laser system. This FDA-approved laser treatment utilizes ultraviolet (UV) light to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and target chronic psoriasis plaques that may not respond to less powerful topical treatments. Additionally, I may also prescribe a prescription medicine to assist in keeping plaque psoriasis under control.”
For Shingles:
“Shingles is far more common than many people realize. In fact, anyone who ever had chickenpox as a child is potentially at risk of developing shingles as an adult. Shingles can manifest as a very painful rash-like blemish, but if left untreated it can pose other health concerns including potential long-term nerve damage. This is why it is critical to try to see us and get on antiviral medication within 3 days of your outbreak. In a case where shingles is detected, I may recommend a combination of antiviral prescription medications, prescription medication to minimize nerve pain, and over-the-counter pain relievers to help by addressing the underlying virus while minimizing uncomfortable shingles symptoms. In some cases, I may also prescribe a topical antibiotic to help soothe the skin and prevent potential infections”
