What are the Different Types of Dermatitis?
Dermatitis consists of a wide variety of skin conditions and, while this condition is typically not harmful, it is characterized by inflammation, small bumps or blisters, oozing, flaking, and/or swollen and reddened skin. Since dermatitis occurs in multiple forms, it can be difficult for patients to figure out exactly what type of skin condition they are dealing with. To help our patients navigate dermatitis, the board-certified dermatologists and physician assistants at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta are sharing their extensive knowledge about diagnosing and treating dermatitis. To give you a general idea about the common types of dermatitis, we have laid out brief overviews of each.
Stasis dermatitis typically affects individuals with poor circulation in their legs due to varicose veins and associated fluid buildup. This condition is characterized by areas of redness, swelling, itching and possibly rash on the surface of the skin.
As the name suggests, allergic contact dermatitis occurs when allergens come into contact with and inflame the skin. This type of dermatitis can appear in the form of itching, rash, blisters, bumps and draining fluid.
Neurodermatitis is a condition that forms from excess scratching of the skin. Over time, repeated scratching can cause the skin to become increasingly itchy, scaly, discolored and leathery.
Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when the skin is exposed to an irritant. Unlike allergic contact dermatitis, this condition is not caused by allergens, but rather by irritants such as soap, laundry detergent and deodorant.
Eczema is a skin condition that appears as itchy, dry, reddish patches on the skin. The causes of eczema are not officially known, but people of any age can develop and suffer from this condition.
While the cause of perioral dermatitis is unknown, this skin condition typically occurs on the face and is characterized by small red bumps, rash and mild peeling around the mouth, nose and eyes.
Seborrheic dermatitis is commonly found on the scalp and appears as scaly red patches that can cause itching, soreness, flaking and scaling. Changes in the weather can cause this dermatitis to appear more frequently.
