In an effort to keep you, our valued patients, safe during Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have compiled a list of our latest hours, safety precautions, procedural protocols, teledermatology services, and more. We are still screening patients over the phone and in-person and ask that all patients stay home if they exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19 or suspect they may have been exposed. If you do come into the office, we ask that you come alone (unless accompanying a minor as a guardian) and practice social distancing in waiting and exam rooms. We will continue to keep you updated. As of now, we will be continuing our COVID-19 protocol indefinitely. Visit our COVID-19 Info page for our most recent update.
People change a little bit every day – we change our opinions, our attitudes, our perspectives. It’s part of what makes us human. But for some, this means falling out of love with a past piece of body art. Fortunately, recent advancements in tattoo removal technology, like the PicoSure™ laser, have minimized the process and have busted those old tattoo removal myths.
Myth #1: The tattoo can’t be removed completely
It’s true that there are certain colors that are more difficult to remove than others, like blues and greens. But PicoSure™ tattoo removal uses an improved method of short bursts of energy to break up these more difficult hues for a more thorough removal.
Myth #2: Tattoo removal is painful
During removal treatments, the sensation is mild and easily manageable.
Myth #3: There could be side effects
In reality, even earlier methods of tattoo removal have a low risk of side effects or injury to the surrounding skin, and the enhanced precision of the PicoSure™ laser technology reduces the risk even further.
Myth #4: Tattoo removal is expensive
While the number of treatments varies by patient, the effectiveness of PicoSure™ can significantly reduce the number of treatments needed for removal, which makes the tattoo removal treatment especially economical.
Certainly new technology is only as successful as the provider performing the treatment. That’s why Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) is the perfect place to go for your tattoo removal. Not only do our providers have a combined 150 years of experience, but we were one of the first practices in Georgia to obtain a PicoSure™ laser system. That means we have more experience with the PicoSure™ laser, so you can be assured that you’re receiving the best expertise available.
To give our patients even more benefit during their laser tattoo removal treatments, DAA will be unveiling a brand new system, the PicoWay Laser, later this month! Be sure to check back on our blog to learn more about the PicoWay laser system and in the meantime, if you’d like to find out more about PicoSure™ tattoo removal, contact us to set up an appointment to discuss your options (and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ for updates and specials). It’s the first step to getting back to having the skin that you (the current you) can love.
With eight specialty centers and eight providers, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) has a LARGE, experienced team ready to help you along your skincare journey. We wanted our patients to get to know each provider more outside of the office and have featured a different provider over the past several months. This month, our spotlight is on Delmer L. Henderson, PA-C (or Del as we call him around the office)!
Del received his Bachelors of Life Sciences from Kansas State University prior to completing a second BS in Physician Assistant at the University of Oklahoma and eventually his MPAS in Emergency Medicine from the University of Nebraska. Del got his start as a Physician Assistant while employed with the United States Army. In fact, Del has provided a lot of medical care in many fast paced facilities around the world. To share a few fun facts about Del with you:
During his time as a Physician Assistant at the 16th Medical Detachment in West Germany, Del provided care to some 2,000 active duty members and their dependents and also served as the Nuclear Security Officer for the Personnel Reliability Program.
Specializing in family practice, emergency medicine and industrial medicine, Del worked in a part-time position at the Doctors on Duty Clinic in Monterrey, California.
Del has experience administering emergency treatment to battlefield casualties with outpatient care and treatment that he gained while working under the supervision of a Physician, Physician Assistant
Along with an impressive resume, Del joined the DAA team in 2001 and has flourished as a guru on all things cosmetic dermatology. Del works with many of our patients to help them address everything from acne scarring to excess fat. DAA likes to stay on the cutting edge of the latest technological dermatology treatments and Del is always eager and ready to learn about the new systems we introduce. Whether a patient wants to slim down their waistline with CoolSculpting® or UltraShape® fat reduction treatments or turn back the hands of time with facial rejuvenation procedures like Ultherapy® facial skin tightening, Del has logged countless hours perfecting treatment practices to ensure that DAA patients are getting the maximum results from each and every treatment.
When Del isn’t spending time with patients in our office, he enjoys sports, golf and boating in his spare time. We hope you have enjoyed the profiles we have shared so far and will continue to check back to learn about our future spotlight providers! If you’re feeling chatty, don’t hesitate to join the conversation on DAA’s Facebook, Twitter or Google+ pages or feel free to contact us during office hours if you have any questions or concerns.
The providers of Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) are waving goodbye to summer and saying hello to a new fall season. Though crisp, cooler air has replaced hot weather and suntanned skin, we want to offer you smooth, silky skin during this transition. With the help of a few quick visits at our Laser Institute of Georgia or Skin Medics™ Medical Spa, shaving, waxing, and other hair removal methods will be a thing of the past.
While never shaving or waxing again seems unimaginable, laser hair removal makes it possible. The 2013 ASDS Survey on Dermatologic Procedures reports over 464,000 laser hair removal treatments performed last year. This means that hundreds of thousands of people are saving time and money with laser hair removal each year! Just four to six visits are typically required for long lasting hair removal, though individual results vary. At the end of your treatment plan, the time you’ll save by eliminating shaving and waxing will be invaluable to a busy fall schedule.
Included in our collection of skin-transforming, FDA-approved lasers are the GentleLase 755 nm and GentleYag 1064 nm. These revolutionary lasers can safely treat almost any area of the body, including the legs, underarms, arms, face, chest, back and bikini. Through October 10th, 2014, we are offering 10% off laser hair removal of a previously treated area and 15% off laser hair removal treatment of new areas. Please contact us today for an appointment by calling (404)256-4457, ext. 232 for Jan Buckley-Levenson or (770)992-1295 for Patricia Shaw.
With over 25 years of laser experience and active membership in the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS), our hair removal specialists and providers prioritize conversation with each patient regarding their cosmetic skin treatment goals before determining a hair removal plan. During a consultation with our certified laser hair removal technicians, patients can discuss expected results for their specific skin and hair type. To schedule an appointment, contact us today. Be sure to connect with DAA on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ for the latest skincare specials and news.
Each month, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) introduces one of our experienced providers in an effort for our patients to get to know us better and find the best provider for their needs. As a passionate board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Joseph Payne’s approach to skin care is all encompassing and wide ranging. In his valued position at DAA, he utilizes a variety of techniques from treating an array of skin conditions, like acne and psoriasis, to skin cancer removal surgery and scar improvement. He also performs clinical research and lectures around the country on the topic of psoriasis. Rushing from appointment to appointment isn’t a part of his profession: he enjoys spending time teaching and assisting patients in choosing the most effective, evidence-backed skincare therapy for their individual needs. He places high significance on ensuring first and foremost that patients are healthy and satisfied, going the extra mile to make sure they are confident in the look and feel of their skin.
Dr. Payne received his Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering with Highest Honors in March of 1996 before the completion of his medical degree at the prestigious Duke University School of Medicine. After feeling moved into action by the immense tragedy of 9/11 and its devastating effects on the United States, Dr. Payne enlisted in the military. He devoted his time and medical expertise to serving our country while he completed his residency at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. From 2004 to 2008, he worked as the department head of dermatology at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, where he performed general, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. This surgery included Mohs cancer surgery, which he now performs expertly at DAA.
Dr. Payne cherishes his time in the military, a significant period where he was able to hone in on his medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology skills while giving back to the country he loves. In fact, Dr. Payne has gained a great following of military patients while working at DAA which further complements his comprehensive treatment philosophy and vast medical and military experience.
In addition to being a valued provider at DAA, Dr. Payne enjoys traveling, snow skiing, running and spending time with his family. In the coming weeks, we look forward to providing further insight into the essential roles of our providers. Dermatology Associates of Atlanta is proud to hold the distinction of being the first practice in Georgia to offer CoolSculpting® non-invasive fat reduction. As the treatment has grown more popular, we like to remind patients of the importance of visiting a knowledgeable, experienced provider to ensure a stress-free, easy experience that yields the best results. Below, find tips to maximize your CoolSculpting® fat-reduction treatments.
1.Lose the weight first. When it comes to CoolSculpting®, patients with small areas of exercise- and diet-resistant fat are the most appropriate candidates. Therefore, if weight loss is your goal, we recommend reaching your goal weight with diet and exercise before choosing CoolSculpting®. Once you’re there, visit us for the final shaping process of achieving your desired look. While a specific body mass index (BMI) is not a prerequisite, we do screen candidates for their eligibility to ensure maximized results.
2.Have patience going into it. Results begin appearing about three weeks following treatment, with noticeable results in two months due to the lymphatic system’s process of expelling fat. Full results (usually a 20% fat reduction) will be present in four to six months. While one treatment will produce noticeable results, many patients opt to have a secondary treatment or more to achieve desired CoolSculpting® results.
3. Consider targeting multiple areas. With new DualCool equipment, you can address both outer thighs in addition to the tummy. All three areas can now be treated in a single one to two hour timeslot with no surgery, downtime, or unwanted side effects. Along with the benefit of treating multiple areas with DualCool technology, patients can benefit from treatment times being cut in half to help you return to your busy schedule in less time.
It’s important to keep in mind that CoolSculpting® should be reserved for patients looking to sculpt, not lose pounds. Without the downtime associated with surgical techniques like liposuction, CoolSculpting® can help you feel more confident in that swimsuit, slide into those “skinny jeans,” and feel better about yourself overall. To learn about CoolSculpting®, which freezes treatment areas beyond the point where fat cells can survive, contact us to schedule a consultation today. To stay connected with Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
When beginning a new acne treatment, acne sufferers are often excited and motivated by the possibility of finally obtaining clear skin and the confidence it brings. However, when beginning an acne control routine, patients may need to tweak a few habits to realize the results they are looking for.
In order to see the best results from treatments, they must be used exactly as prescribed. There may be more than one causation for your acne, and acne medications can normally only target one to two causes. For this reason, the patient must follow the exact instructions and order given from their board certified DAA dermatologist for their specific combination of products. Adding acne treatments not prescribed by your dermatologist can irritate skin, leading you to more breakouts.
While exercise is a great way to increase circulation and provide a glow, the sweat that accompanies it can clog pores and aggravate acne-prone skin. After sweating, gently cleanse skin with your recommended cleanser to prevent breakouts. Avoid attempting to scrub the sweat out, which can irritate the skin and make acne worse. In general, it is a good idea to discuss the usage of scrubs, toners, and masks with harsh ingredients with your dermatologist. A mild cleanser used twice daily is more effective for getting breakouts under control.
Along the same lines, popping, touching, or squeezing acne makes it worse. While gentle extraction of non-inflamed blackheads can help prevent later breakouts, in most cases picking, squeezing, or scratching acne is not recommended because it may lead to scarring. Getting rid of acne can become nearly impossible due to the bacteria carried on hands and the possible long-lasting acne scars that the abrasive prodding can leave. If you choose to gently extract, it is best to use an extraction tool or fully sanitized hands.
Many acne sufferers already have acne scars that they attempt to cover with makeup. Wearing oil-free makeup that is free of harmful chemicals that could aggravate skin is fine, but be sure to apply topical acne medication prior. As always, wash off makeup before bed. After showering or washing the face, wait five to fifteen minutes to apply acne medication. Wet skin is the most absorbent, which can lead to irritation depending on the product. For all skin types, irritation can be reduced by using a product tailor made for your skin. At DAA, we offer customized prescription compounds based on your specific skin and acne type to improve skin condition and minimize inflammation. Additionally, we recommend Isolaz ™, a combination light and suction treatment to heal acne with added perks of eliminating sun damage, spider veins, and unwanted hair.
If you do not see immediate results, don’t be discouraged. As noted earlier, acne is a tricky condition often with a variety of causes and triggers. It generally takes most patients continued use of acne medications for a series of weeks or even months before dramatic results can be noticed. Once you’ve obtained blemish free skin, continue to use at least one medication that contains acne-fighting ingredients to keep skin under control.
