Unwanted fat plagues nearly all of us to some level, and at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, we help patients with this issue on a daily basis. While we all know the basic steps toward losing weight, the solution is a bit trickier for people with stubborn bulges but no extra weight to lose. In this case, the specific fat cells need to be targeted directly, and unfortunately, diet and exercise often doesn’t do the job. The good news, though, is that cosmetic surgery isn’t always necessary thanks to non-surgical treatments like CoolSculpting®.
CoolSculpting® fat reduction uses targeted cooling to eliminate about 20% of the fat cells in your targeted area, working with your body’s natural processes to clear the fat away and give you slimmer contours. But it’s far from the only way to get these results non-surgically. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, we offer four unique treatments for nonsurgical fat reduction, and the chart below compares them all.
CoolSculpting®, UltraShape®, BodyFX™, and Kybella® open the door for patients who want a sculpted physique without the recovery time and expense of liposuction. To find which one may be the best option for you, schedule a consultation at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. To keep up with new treatments, special offers, and more, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, too.
The term “body contouring” is being used more and more often in the aesthetic field. But as a patient, how much do you actually know about it? At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA), we’re dedicated to treating our patients from head to toe for both the health and the appearance of their skin, and this includes body contouring. The term “body contouring” simply means sculpting your body to have the curves and proportions you want by removing fat from specific areas, and in some cases, reducing cellulite and skin laxity for an even slimmer, more toned look.
The Difference between Body Contouring and Weight Loss
Losing weight by eating healthier and exercising is an ideal course of action for people who are overweight and want to improve their health while also losing fat throughout their entire body. Body contouring, however, is designed for patients who are already at or near a healthy weight, and who simply have specific “problem areas” that they want to slim down, like a small bulge on the abdomen or “saddle bags” on the sides of the thighs. In other words, weight loss provides health benefits as well as aesthetic changes, while body contouring is done for purely cosmetic reasons. In fact, body contouring is often used as a “finishing touch” for someone who has reached or nearly reached their goal weight and just can’t seem to lose that last bit of fat regardless of how hard they try.
Types of Body Contouring
The category of body contouring includes both surgical and non-surgical fat removal. Of course, surgical fat removal is known as liposuction, and it involves using a tiny, narrow metal tube to break up and suction out fat cells from the target area through extremely small incisions (typically just a few millimeters long). At DAA, our own Dr. D. Scott Karempelis has been performing liposuction for over twenty years, and he also enhances the results by using SlimLipo™. This unique laser uses targeted warmth as part of the surgical process of tumescent liposuction, and this makes the fat cells easier to remove, but it also tightens the skin in the area as well, offering a more comprehensive result.
But in the past decade, new technologies have also emerged to remove fat non-surgically, with no incisions, no recovery time, and short, convenient treatments. At DAA, we offer three distinct procedures:
CoolSculpting® – uses precise cooling at a level which damages fat cells without affecting skin or other tissue
BodyFX™ – uses radio frequency (RF) energy to create targeted warmth around the fat cells, while also reducing cellulite and tightening the skin
UltraShape® – uses ultrasound energy (similar to the energy used for sonograms for pregnant women) to damage the fat cells
While each of these treatments use a different form of energy, they all work by non-invasively killing fat cells in the treatment area. Then, your body’s natural metabolism will remove these damaged fat cells over the course of several weeks or a few months, leaving you with less fat and a more sculpted physique.
Maintaining Body Contouring Results
For the most part, you have the same number of fat cells throughout your life; weight gain and weight loss happen when the fat cells enlarge or shrink. Body contouring, on the other hand, removes a certain number of fat cells. While these fat cells won’t return, the remaining fat cells in the treatment area as well as in other areas of your body are just as capable of enlarging as they were before, so if you gain weight in the future, it will have a negative impact on your results.
At DAA, we offer dozens of unique cosmetic treatments in addition to all the ways we treat medical skin conditions, because we’re dedicated to providing our patients with the best quality of care from head to toe. The providers of Dermatology Associates of Atlanta consistently hear from patients about an array of over-the-counter products, including skin creams and herbal remedies, which claim to make cellulite disappear. However, many of these treatments fall short of following through on erasing unsightly, dimpled skin from cellulite-prone areas. Below, we explain why.
The answer may be clearer when we understand what cellulite is. Cellulite occurs when pockets of fat push up against connective tissue underneath the skin. While it is often associated with being overweight, people of any weight can have cellulite. Hormones, lack of exercise, and diet all contribute to the formation of cellulite. There are plenty of natural ways to attempt to reduce cellulite, starting with diet and exercise. Increasing water intake to flush toxins can plump the skin and lessen the appearance of cellulite overtime. Eating more fruits and vegetables can up your fiber intake and help with weight loss, most likely resulting in a decrease of the lumps and bumps you see in cellulite-prone areas. Strength training can also help you replace fat with muscle, smoothing the skin.
Though these methods may be effective for some people, for others, cellulite can be extremely stubborn, and may even be impossible to eliminate by your own efforts. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, we offer several options for fat and cellulite reduction, including offer SlimLipo™ laser technology to melt fat for easier removal while simultaneously tightening surrounding tissue. SlimLipo™ is a body-sculpting laser that selectively targets fat and dermal tissue with dual wavelengths that serve two separate purposes. While one wavelength melts the fat, allowing the fat to be removed through micro cannulas, the other targets and stimulates collagen, resulting in firmer skin.
For those interested in reducing cellulite with the use of dermatologist-tested products, we offer Oligo DX® Cellulite Reducing Gel, which features a cleansing and detoxifying affect to reduce cellulite. We also offer Murad Firm and Tone Serum, which can improve the overall appearance of skin up to 80% by increasing skin firmness and elasticity while masking imperfections, aiding in cellulite reduction.

Within its eight specialty centers, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta offers a variety of treatments and procedures for both medical and cosmetic purposes. Among those procedures is liposuction, which utilizes mechanical suctioning power to remove excess, exercise-resistant fat from the face, neck, chest, arms, abdomen (stomach), love handles, saddle bags, buttocks, and knees of men and women. Performed within our Often our patients do not realize that our dermatologists are also skilled to successfully perform liposuction procedures, and in actuality the specialties of dermatology and plastic surgery make up the vast majority of liposuction procedures performed in the United States. Liposuction is ideal for treating smaller areas of concern such as stubborn fat that may not budge despite your best diet and exercise efforts. For patients seeking general spot refinement on areas such as a lower belly pooch, liposuction using a micro cannula, or thin suctioning tool, allows our skilled providers to address the minutest areas of fat. However, liposuction is not ideal for patients looking to strengthen abdominal walls after pregnancy or who have experienced extreme weight loss. If excess skin removal is necessary, it may be more suitable to discuss this with a plastic surgeon.
Liposuction is not a weight loss solution and patients are advised to schedule a consultation with Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s board certified dermatologists Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Scott Karempelis to discuss your fat reduction goals.
Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Scott Karempelis have been performing liposuction since 1990. During their decades of experience, they have implemented the latest fat-reduction technology and techniques using various methods, including dermatologist-invented tumescent liposuction, autologous fat transfer/transplant, and the less invasive, laser-assisted liposuction method SlimLipo™. Dermatologists have specialized knowledge of properly performing liposuction because of their expertise of proper skin draping, layers, functionality, and healing. Dermatology Associates of Atlanta was one of the first practices to provide their patients with CoolSculpting®non-surgical fat reduction to address excess fat with no downtime. We utilize DualSculpting® technology, which uses two machines at one time to address two areas at one time.

The physicians and providers of Dermatology Associates of Atlanta understand that everybody is different and every body is shaped differently. For that reason, we offer a variety of fat reduction and liposuction procedures that aren’t one-size-fits-all. Whether you just want to tighten loose skin, get rid of excess fat, or do a little of both, we have a body contouring procedure to meet your needs. Our patients often ask about the differences in fat reduction procedures, so we’ve decided to compile an overview so that our cosmetic treatment patients can be more aware of all of their options.
Drs. Griffin and Karempelis have been practicing tumescent liposuction procedures since 1986, a method that’s still often performed today. In fact, a liposuction study published in ASAPS’ Aesthetic Surgery Journal earlier this year stated that 51% of surgeons preferred tumescent liposuction to other techniques. During tumescent, or “wet,” liposuction, a diluted solution containing a local anesthetic and epinephrine is injected to “puff up” the fat for easier removal. Most patients are able to get back to their normal activities within a week of their procedure, although they should continue to wear post-surgical compression garments in order to reduce swelling and optimize the fat reduction results.
While not exactly a fat reduction procedure, many liposuction patients also pursue fat transfer. During fat transfer, a patient’s own unwanted fat is used to plump up wrinkles and areas of lost volume that contribute to signs of aging similar to the way facial fillers such as Restylane® and Juvéderm work to rejuvenate the appearance. After the excess fat is removed, it is purified and then re-injected into those areas that need refinement like the hands, wrinkles, and even acne scars. Fat transfer also promotes collagen production for ongoing rejuvenation.More
At some point or another, you’ve probably heard the phrase “stubborn fat,” or fat that doesn’t seem to budge no matter how much an individual diets or exercises. Since 1986, Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Scott Karempelis have been taking care of their patients “stubborn fat” by providing safe and effective outpatient tumescent liposuction utilizing both traditional and cutting edge techniques to suit individual cosmetic needs. While liposuction results are greatly influenced by the surgeon’s skill, fat reduction is further facilitated by ever-advancing body contouring technology. In the 25 years our surgeons have performed liposuction procedures, we’ve watched and worked with advancing liposuction technology. For years we worked with ultrasonic techniques that claimed to have an edge on traditional liposuction, but now lasers can more precisely target the unwanted fat for easier, safer, and more effective surgical removal. With so many laser liposuction systems on the market, it’s difficult to know which laser assisted machine you should choose. That is why, after thorough research, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta is excited to offer SlimLipo™ to our Atlanta patients. Despite its novelty, this technology has already become the top choice of laser liposuction methods by many surgeons.
SlimLipo™ laser assisted liposuction does not deemphasize the importance of selecting a properly experienced surgeon, but acts more as the “icing on the cake”: resulting in faster healing, less drainage, and most importantly, skin tightening post- procedure. Our specialty center team at the Laser Institute of Georgia has long known the dramatic collagen production potential of laser skin resurfacing. Now, the combination skin tightening and fat reduction benefits of SlimLipo™ laser liposuction allows our board certified dermatological surgeons to use micro cannulas to remove fat with less bruising, smaller incisions, less blood loss, and the best part—less downtime and faster healing.More
