Hair loss is immensely common; treating it with tried-and-true medical procedures is not. Men and women alike tend to think their only options for addressing hair loss are topical medications or hair transplant surgery. We’re happy to report that medical technology has lead to a variety of non-surgical hair restoration treatments.
At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, the experienced professionals and board-certified dermatologists at our hair loss specialty centers are always on the cutting edge. We offer the latest non-surgical hair restoration procedures, like natural growth factors, microneedling, red light therapy, and prescription topical compounds, as well as new and advanced techniques to make hair transplant surgery less invasive and more successful.
Today, one of our highly skilled hair restoration specialists Dr. Ashley Curtis is giving you a closer look at one of these treatments in particular: natural growth factors. In the video below, she explains the process of a growth factor treatment and how it helps slow hair loss and support hair regrowth.
Before you start shopping for toupees, hair pieces, or wigs, it’s important to know that you have a wide variety of options for treating your hair loss. Our hair loss specialists can evaluate the causes of your hair loss and determine the best treatment method for your short-term and long-term results. To get started on the road to fuller hair, schedule a consultation at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta by calling 404-256-4457. 2017 is almost over, and it’s certainly been one for the books at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. We’ve been serving the Atlanta area for 40 years, and every year brings a thrilling line-up of medical advances and exciting changes. 2017 is no exception, so we’re looking back on some of the practice’s best moments of the year:
Best Self Best of 2017 Contest
Each year, Best Self magazine takes a reader poll to identify the favorite providers for a variety of health and wellness-related fields, from plastic surgeons to yoga instructors. For the second year in a row, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta was thrilled to be named Atlanta’s Best Dermatology Practice Overall! On top of this practice-wide honor, our own Dr. Ashley Curtis also received the title of Best Women’s Thinning Hair Treatment Provider for her work at our Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss. Thank you to all our patients who nominated and voted for us!
New Treatments and Specials
This year has been full of innovation and advancement in the medical field, and we’re thrilled to bring so many new choices to our patients, including:
Eczema Center
This year, we had the joy of opening our own specialty center for eczema, allergies, and other skin sensitivities. This specialty center focuses on needle-free patch testing to determine what allergens and irritants are triggering patients’ skin symptoms. Once we determine your unique triggers, we can help you develop a skin care plan catered to your needs and goals.
Microneedling for Hair Growth
For patients who are in the earlier stages of hair loss, one of many nonsurgical options is microneedling. This procedure uses short, ultrafine needles to restore health and vitality to the hair follicles and surrounding tissue. For maximum effectiveness, it is often combined with natural growth factors.
New Hair Transplant Surgery Technology
For patients who seek the more comprehensive results of hair transplant surgery, 2017 improved the process for them as well. Our specialty center, The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research, now offers an advanced new system (one of several choices for FUE hair transplants) that more precisely extracts healthy hair follicles for transplant. The result is a more efficient surgery with smoother results.
New Facial Fillers
Facial fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® have long been a popular choice for wrinkle reduction. This year, both brands came out with beneficial new fillers. Juvéderm® released their new Vollure™ XC, a longer-lasting hyaluronic acid filler for wrinkles around the mouth and nose. Restylane® released Restylane® Refyne™, which offers more flexible molecules so patients can maintain a more natural feel while reducing their wrinkles.
PicoSure® for Skin Rejuvenation
PicoSure® is a popular laser for tattoo removal, and we’ve been using the equioment at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta for years. But they recently released a new lens array that allows the laser to reduce sun damage and restore a more youthful look to the skin, too. It’s successful for nearly any area of the body, and it offers great results without the recovery time of most other laser procedures.
LunulaLaser® for Nail Fungus
Until now, nail fungus has been notoriously difficult to treat because the fungi typically needs to be targeted underneath the nail, and so the nail gets in the way. LunulaLaser®, however, is an advanced laser that penetrates through the nail to noninvasively treat the fungi at its source. It’s more effective than topical treatments yet with fewer side effects than oral medications.
Scalp Micropigmentation
Micropigmentation is a very precise, tattoo-like process that can be used to disguise lightened scar tissue, stretch marks, and other areas by mimicking the color of your natural skin. At The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research, our trained micropigmentation specialist offers this treatment for the scalp. It can be used to disguise scars from hair transplant surgery, injuries, or other surgeries. Or, for patients with thinning hair, micropigmentation can also be used to make your hair appear fuller.
SilkPeel® Dermalinfusion®
SilkPeel® is a unique treatment that takes traditional microdermabrasion a step further. On top of exfoliating away the damaged surface skin (microdermabrasion), SilkPeel® simultaneously uses suction to clear out dead skin cells and other debris and also infuses the skin with specialized topical medication. This process is helpful for acne, sun damage, fine lines, acne scars, and just a dull or uneven complexion that could use some brightening.
This year has certainly been a full one for us at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. But through all the hectic months, we’re never too busy to appreciate our valued patients. It’s been a joy to work with you all, and we want to offer you our deepest gratitude for your support and for letting us treat all your skin care needs. To learn more about all we have to offer for your skincare needs, explore our website and follow Dermatology Associates of Atlanta on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google+.
Hair restoration surgery may be a minimally invasive surgery, but it’s certainly a procedure you should take seriously. Getting informed about the ins and outs of the surgery can help you as a patient to be more prepared and have a smoother recovery with better results. With that goal in mind, our skilled providers at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta and our specialty centers The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research and The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss are here to help.
For professional tips about how to prepare and what to expect from your hair restoration surgery, check out the video below by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ashley Curtis.
For patients with hair loss, there are so many options available today. On top of at-home measures like topical medication, nonsurgical treatments can offer great results, from customized prescription topical medications and natural growth factors to red light therapy and more. But for patients who want significant hair regrowth, nothing can match the capabilities of hair restoration surgery.
Ultimately, the first step is a thorough and accurate diagnosis of the type of hair loss you have and the cause(s) behind it. To get started on the road toward fuller, healthier hair, schedule a hair restoration consultation with either of our two specialty centers.
Whether you’re a man or a woman, even the early stages of hair loss can take a toll on your self-confidence. If you’re not someone who wants to embrace a smoother scalp, our specialized board-certified dermatologists at The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research and The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss have a wide array of potential hair restoration treatment options. For some patients, the best choice is a customized topical prescription medication to slow the progression of hair loss (often in combination with procedures to restore new hair growth like hair transplant surgery, red light therapy, natural growth gractors, homeopathic solutions, and more), which our doctors individually design for each patient’s specific needs. However, even the best medication is only fully effective if it’s used properly.
To help you make the most of your hair loss medications, our own Dr. Ashley Curtis demonstrates how to properly apply your prescription products:
Taking control of your hair loss doesn’t have to be daunting. With decades of specialized experience, our providers will listen to your needs, evaluate your hair loss, and create a treatment plan that truly fits you. To get started, schedule a hair restoration consultation today. For more tips about caring for your skin, hair, and nails, follow Dermatology Associates of Atlanta on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
For men and women who are losing their hair, a hair transplant surgery can be an efficient way to restore a fuller head of hair. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA), we have established two unique specialty centers for the purpose of hair restoration—The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research, and The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss. As life-changing as a hair transplant can be, it is still a surgery, so scarring is a concern for many patients. That’s why our highly skilled and experienced surgeons use a variety of methods to limit scars and to reduce them after they’ve formed.
Minimizing Scars during Surgery
Keeping scars mild actually begins during the procedure itself. There are two primary types of hair transplant surgeries: Follicular Unit Grafting (FUG) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). FUG has gotten a reputation for leaving a significant scar, because it involves a strip of hair-rich skin being taken from the back or sides of the head so that the follicles can be grafted onto areas where the patient is losing their hair. This usually leaves a narrow, linear scar. At our DAA hair transplant centers, however, all of our surgeries are performed by extremely skilled hair transplant surgeons Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Ashley Curtis, who minimize scarring by keeping incisions and closures precise to allow for the most seamless healing possible. On top of this, Dr. Griffin and Dr. Curtis use a specialized suturing technique that allows hair to grow through the scar line, which greatly reduces the scar’s appearance.
In FUE surgery, on the other hand, the scarring takes a much different shape. Rather than removing a strip of skin, FUE extracts individual groups of hair follicles with a circular device, so the scars appear as many tiny dots instead of one thin line. This alone can make scars less noticeable because they’re more scattered throughout the existing hair, but at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, we keep the scars even more subtle by taking advantage of the latest technology available for precise and successful extractions, which means we can produce the fullness you’re looking for with fewer scars.
Reducing Scars after Surgery
While the measures above can go a long way toward keeping your scars minimal, there are additional ways we can continue to reduce or disguise scarring after surgery, whether your procedure was performed with us at The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research or The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss, or at another facility. For many patients, hair transplant scars are flat and the color of their natural skin or a slightly lighter color, and the primary reason they’re noticeable is because they don’t have hair growing within them. For these patients, our certified micro-pigmentation specialist uses a highly precise form of tattooing to make the scar tissue more closely match your natural skin tone, including adding specks of color to mimic hair follicles and “stubble.” This same technique can also be used for patients who have other surgical or injury scars. Keep in mind, however, that micro-pigmentation is most successful in flat scars that are the same color or a lighter color that the patient’s surrounding skin. If your scar has a bumpy texture, your first step may be to use other scar reduction techniques that can help to flatten the scar.
There are a number of factors that affect hair transplant scarring, like patient health, surgical technique, the extensiveness of the surgery, following post-surgical care instructions, and many more. This is precisely why it’s so important to look for a surgeon who is a true expert in the procedure. To find out whether hair restoration surgery may be an option for you, call Dermatology Associates of Atlanta where we can connect you with the right specialty center for your needs. For more skin care tips, special offers, and information about the many types of treatments we perform, follow DAA on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
Most people think of hair loss as an issue affecting aging men. But there are two misconceptions here: first, hair loss often starts at a younger age than most men think, and second, even though it’s more frequent in men, hair loss is actually a common issue for women, too. In fact, it’s such an underserved area that at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA), we even opened the first hair restoration center for women in Georgia: The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss. While many women can actually enjoy success with non-surgical treatment options like red light therapy, natural growth factors, and prescription topical or oral medications for hair restoration, the question arises: can women also have hair transplant surgery?
We won’t keep you in suspense—the answer is yes, women can be (and often are) excellent candidates for hair transplant surgery. In the video below, one of our skilled and experienced hair loss experts and transplant surgeons, Dr. Ashley Curtis, goes into more detail about women’s hair restoration surgery and how it can differ from surgery for men.
Whether you’re a man or a woman, if you have hair loss and want to do something about it, your first step is to schedule a consultation with The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research or The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss. We’ll be able to evaluate your condition, determine the underlying cause of your hair loss, and explain your treatment options. Plus, for more helpful tips about hair restoration or the dozens of other ways we can improve the health and appearance of your skin, hair, and nails, follow Dermatology Associates of Atlanta on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
Looking for a new doctor can be a stressful process. After all, your health is at stake, and in the case of dermatology, your appearance is at stake, too. That’s why many of our patients have offered a helping hand to other Atlantans by posting reviews on websites like Facebook, Yelp, and RealSelf. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA), in addition to our three board-certified physician assistants, our practice includes five board-certified dermatologists, each with their own specialties and personal styles. To get a better sense of all of our doctors, take a look at some of the things their patients had to say:
Dr. Edmond Griffin
Dr. Griffin is the founder of DAA, and the one who brought us all together. He began as a solo practice in 1976, and has built up DAA to the success it is now, helping hundreds of patients every day. On top of general dermatology, Dr. Griffin specializes in hair loss and hair transplants at one of our specialty centers, The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research.
Dr. D. Scott Karempelis
When Dr. Karempelis (or “Dr. K,” as he is affectionately known to his patients and around the office) teamed up with Dr. Griffin in 1986, our practice officially adopted the name Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. Among other areas of dermatology, Dr. K largely focuses on laser treatments. In fact, our Laser Institute of Georgia is the largest laser skin care center in the Southeast.
Dr. Stephen Kraus
Just five years after Dr. K and Dr. Griffin joined forces, Dr. Kraus entered DAA as well. While he has a wide range of skills, Dr. Kraus has become most well-known for treating even the most stubborn acne effectively, often using customized prescription compounds which he designs for each patient’s unique skin.
Dr. Joseph Payne
In 2008, Dr. Payne became a part of the DAA team. One of his most specialized skills is performing Mohs skin cancer removal surgery. This highly precise and unique procedure, typically used for more advanced or persistent tumors, involves slowly and carefully removing cancerous tissue and examining it under a microscope to ensure that all of the cancer has been extracted while keeping the scarring as minimal as possible.
Dr. Ashley Curtis
While she is DAA’s newest physician, having joined the practice in 2011, Dr. Curtis has quickly developed an exceptional reputation with our patients. One of her primary areas of expertise is hair loss and hair restoration for both men and women, and she also focuses significantly on using natural growth factors for various treatments.
Finding a dermatologist who provides the quality skin care you deserve can make it easier to have healthier, beautiful skin (because your doctor knows you and can see how your skin reacts over time), and it can also help you stay on track with consistent skin cancer screenings, too. To find your dermatologist, schedule an appointment at DAA. Or, for more about our experienced providers as well as special offers and daily skincare tips, follow Dermatology Associates of Atlanta on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
Whether you’re a man or a woman, it’s never a pleasant moment to look in the mirror and realize that your hair is becoming thinner. While hair transplant surgery is typically the most successful treatment (when paired with products to limit future hair loss, since it’s a progressive condition), it’s understandable that most patients are hesitant about undergoing surgery. The good news is that there are actually a number of non-surgical methods available as well, especially for patients who are still in the early stages of hair loss, and we offer the full range of options at both of our hair restoration specialty centers: The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research and The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss.
Natural Growth Factors
You may have heard of natural growth factors before because it has been used successfully in a number of medical and cosmetic areas. The treatment involves taking a small vial of the patient’s own blood and extracting the natural growth factors within it. These growth factors can be used to stimulate the healing process. While it can be injected to help repair certain orthopedic injuries and to create skin-firming collagen, when it comes to hair restoration, we apply the growth factors topically and use micro needling to create pathways into the deeper layers of the skin. By enhancing the health and performance of the hair follicles, the procedure may be used as a standalone hair restoration method or as a way to supplement and improve the results of hair transplant surgery.
Red Light Therapy
We have technology to thank for one of the most successful yet least invasive treatments available. Red light therapy (sometimes called low-level light therapy, or LLLT) uses LED lights, lasers, or both to apply precise wavelengths of energy to the scalp. This energy triggers cell activity and stimulates the hair follicles into improved hair growth. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s two specialty hair restoration centers, we offer red light therapy as an in-office treatment, but we also offer a portable product called iGrow®, which allows patients to continue their treatment at home.
Topical Medications
Especially for patients who are just beginning to notice thinning hair, topical medications can offer a simple and inexpensive way to limit the progression of hair loss. Most patients have already heard of Rogaine®, which has often proven successful in slowing down hair loss, but if you’re looking for a stronger or more specialized option, we also offer a product called AQ Hair Complex as well as customized prescription compounds which our providers will design specifically for your unique needs. Whichever product is best for you, we recommend a combination of topical medications and therapeutic treatments to all our patients, so that you’re not only repairing the hair loss that has already happened but also limiting the hair loss that happens in the future as well.
Oral Medications
Your body’s internal chemistry can have a powerful impact on hair loss, and certain oral medications have been designed to enhance the health and longevity of your hair follicles from the inside out. Offered at both The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss and The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research, one of the most effective prescriptions available is finasteride, which often goes by the brand names of Proscar® or Propecia®. Many of our patients have also seen success with nutritional supplements like Help Hair® and Viviscal® Professional, which focus primarily on the vitamins and amino acids which nourish the hair follicles from within.
Hair thinning and hair loss affect a larger percentage of both men and women than most people realize. In fact, it will affect the majority of us at some point in our lives. Whether your hair loss is caused by genetics, hormones, hair trauma, or other causes, rest assured that we will be able to identify the best possible treatments for you. If you’re ready to learn about your options (surgical, non-surgical, or both), call Dermatology Associates of Atlanta to schedule a consultation. Or, for more information and tips about our services, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
Did you know that our providers, as board-certified dermatologists and physician assistants who specialize in dermatology, are experts in not only your skin but your hair and nails as well? Your manicurist and hair stylist may be able to help you with the cosmetic side of your hair and nails, but when it comes to keeping them healthy (which lays the foundation for those great haircuts and manicures), Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) can address a wide variety of concerns.
Hair Loss & Hair Thinning
There are many factors which can cause hair loss for both men and women, and our experts at DAA can determine the underlying cause and offer a variety of treatment options catered to your needs. In fact, two of our nine unique specialty centers are dedicated to this common concern: The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research and The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss. Depending on your specific condition, we offer customized treatment plans including hair restoration surgery, red light therapy, topical and oral medications, micro needling with natural growth factors, and more. As experts in their field, The Griffin Center has also been nominated as Atlanta’s Best Hair Restoration facility in Best Self’s Best of Atlanta contest (go to Best Self’s site before September 30th to cast your vote!).
Nail Fungus
As the most common nail disorder in the US, nail fungus occurs when a fungal infection occurs on under, or within a nail. While it can appear on fingernails or toenails, it’s much more common on the toenails. This is because the feet tend to stay more warm and moist, creating an ideal growing condition for the fungi. While it’s primarily a concern for cosmetic reasons, nail fungus can be treated with laser treatments, oral medications, or topical medications.
Psoriasis of the Nails and Scalp
As a chronic immune condition, psoriasis causes skin cells to multiply at a much higher rate than normal, which leads to patches of skin which are itchy, inflamed, dry, and scaly (called “plaques”) because they’re constantly shedding old skin cells to make way for the over-produced new cells. Each patient is affected in different areas of their body, and for some, this includes the nails and/or the scalp. At our dedicated Psoriasis Treatment Center, we can tailor a treatment plan to each patient, potentially consisting of topical treatments, specialized shampoos, phototherapy (using precise UVA or UVB light to slow the cell growth), and systemic medicines (such as pills or injections).
Dandruff (and conditions which look like dandruff)
Dandruff appears when the scalp sheds small flakes of skin cells. While straightforward dandruff can typically be treated by simply using a specialty and/or prescription shampoo, many patients think they have dandruff when in fact they have one of several other conditions which cause this similar flaking. These include certain types of dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, and fungal infections of the scalp. Our providers at DAA can determine the true cause of your flaking and recommend treatments best suited for your needs.
As our patients already know, regardless of how much makeup you wear, having healthy, beautiful skin really makes a difference in your overall look, and the same is true for your hair and nails. If you want to discuss what we can do to enhance the health and appearance of your skin, hair, and nails, schedule a consultation at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. Plus, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ for more aesthetic tips, and don’t forget to vote for us as Atlanta’s Best Dermatologist in Best Self’s 2016 Best of Atlanta competition!
Let’s face it—our skin really takes a beating over the summer. Most of us spend more time outside during the warmer months, which means a dramatic uptick in sun exposure, often making us look older or more tired than we truly should. That’s why our skin care special offers and events this September are designed to help you combat the effects of the summer and get your skin back into shape…or even into better shape than it was in last spring!
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel can be a successful way to address a number of aesthetic concerns, from acne scars and wrinkles to age spots due to sun damage. This month, you can take advantage of our “buy 3 get 1 free” special to do a comprehensive and customized series of peels.
Fall Open House
October 5th, 2016: Phone Sale 12pm-1pm, Open House 4pm-6pm
If you’ve never taken advantage of one of our Open Houses in the past, don’t miss out on this one! It’s an opportunity to not only meet with physicians and representatives and learn about all the latest cosmetic treatments, but also to get fantastic deals on many of our cosmetic services!
DEJ Eye Cream™ by Revision®
The already delicate skin around your eyes is often one of the first places to show fine lines and wrinkles—especially when you have sun exposure accelerating the aging process. Fortunately, Revision®’s popular DEJ eye cream™ is designed for this unique area.
Cosmetic Day + Glo Minerals Makeup Event
September 14th, 2016
The sad reality is that basking in the sun will make your skin age faster. But thanks to modern medicine, cosmetic facial injections like Botox®, Restylane®, and Juvéderm® can reduce wrinkles with just one brief treatment (often only 10-15 minutes) and little or no downtime. To save big on your injectables AND to complement them with tips from a professional makeup artist, RSVP today for our Cosmetic Day and our Glo Minerals makeup event.
Micro Needling and Natural Growth Factors
For patients who aren’t candidates for fractionated laser treatments to achieve firmer, younger-looking skin with fewer wrinkles and acne scars (or for patients who simply want the results without the recovery time of a laser treatment), micro needling can be an excellent option. Whether you opt for Réjuvapen® or the more comprehensive Infini™ treatments, adding your natural growth factors can take your results up a notch.
Hair Restoration
If you’ve been putting off hair restoration surgery so that it wouldn’t interfere with your summer plans, this September is the perfect time to finally get back your fuller hair, because you can save up to $2500 if you complete your procedure this month (see certificate for details).
Having healthy, glowing skin is an ongoing process. Ideally, you should combine consistent preventative measures (i.e., sunscreen) with a customized skin care regimen and damage-repairing treatments. To find out what procedures can give you the best possible results, schedule a consultation at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. Or, to stay up-to-date on all our latest specials and events, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
