Frequently Asked Questions About Body Contouring

With summer on its way, many of our patients at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta are already thinking about getting their figures beach-ready. If you want to get rid of a stubborn area of fat before summer, cosmetic body contouring procedures (either surgical or non-surgical) are designed for this exact purpose. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA), we offer four unique options so we can give each patient the best results – surgical liposuction (with or without the skin-firming effect of the SlimLipo™ laser), CoolSculpting®, UltraShape®, and BodyFX™. To bring you up to speed, our board-certified dermatologists and physician assistants have tackled some of the most common questions about body contouring.

non surgical fat reductionWhat’s the difference between body contouring and weight loss?

While both weight loss and body contouring reduce your body fat, they work in very different ways. Weight gain and weight loss happens when your existing fat cells grow or shrink. When you lose weight, the fat cells generally shrink throughout your body. Body contouring, however, directly removes fat cells from a specific area of your body. It’s designed for people who are a healthy weight or very mildly overweight who just want to resolve one or two stubborn areas of fat. For this reason, body contouring does not generate the same results as weight loss.

How long does body contouring take?

Each method of body contouring has a different course of treatment, which means they each require a different amount of your time. Liposuction with SlimLipo™ produces results after just one procedure, but requires a few days of surgical recovery time before returning to work (though the exact time varies from patient to patient). The three non-surgical options (CoolSculpting®, UltraShape®, and BodyFX™) don’t require any recovery time, although results may not be seen for several weeks.

What areas can body contouring treat?

Each body contouring treatment is FDA-approved for specific areas. But whether you want to reduce excess fat in your abdomen, “love handles,” thighs, back, chest, “double chin,” or another area, chances are that we can find the best option for you.

Do I need to keep getting body contouring treatments to maintain my results?

Once you complete your body contouring procedure(s), you don’t need to get any more treatments to maintain your results. However, it’s still possible for you to gain back the fat that was removed, so you do need to keep up with a healthy diet and exercise routine to continue enjoying your results.

Does fat reduction tighten your skin, too?

Some fat reduction procedures also have the ability to tighten skin, particularly SlimLipo™ and BodyFX™. However, if either CoolSculpting® or UltraShape® is a better option for your specific needs, we also offer individual skin tightening procedures that combine well with fat reduction.

A wholesome diet and consistent exercise have endless health benefits, and maintaining a healthy weight is just one of them. But even people with a healthy weight often have areas of unwanted fat that damages their self-confidence. That’s where body contouring comes in. It’s not about losing weight; it’s about sculpting the body you have into your desired shape.
