Summer is a difficult season for skin health in Atlanta. Your increased amount of sun exposure and a higher UV index can negatively affect the youthfulness of your skin and put you at a higher risk for skin cancer. Luckily, there are measures that you can take to restore areas that show signs of aging and damage. With that goal in mind, our summer specials can help you look your summer best.
DAA July Discounts
It’s a great time of the year to show your skin some love. We’re offering limited time discounts on skin refreshers: LaseMD™ skin rejuvenation and Infini™ skin tightening procedures in addition to other anti-aging treatments such as Réjuvapen® Micro Needling and our new NeoStrata® ProSystem Retinol Chemical Peel.
LaseMD™ skin rejuvenation is our newest cosmetic laser procedure and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results. LaseMD™ is unique because it’s non-ablative, so it offers a rapid recovery time. This procedure is safe and effective on all skin types and can treat sun damage, age spots, freckles and hyperpigmentation on the face, neck or décolletage.
Cosmetic Day – July 18th, 2018
This one-day event will give attendees $150 off Restylane® Lyft, Juvéderm Ultra®, Juvéderm Ultraplus® and Radiesse®. Dermatology Associates of Atlanta providers are also extending a $50 discount on Botox® and Dysport®. Cosmetic Day gives our patients and the rest of the Atlanta community a chance to obtain popular skincare, facial fillers and other various cosmetic products at a more affordable price.
The Dermatology Associates of Atlanta hopes that you have a safe and enjoyable rest of the summer and we encourage you to take advantage of the limited-time specials. Facial fillers like Restylane® and Juvéderm® have now become household names. Nearly everyone knows they can fill in facial wrinkles with a few quick injections, and our board-certified dermatologists and physician assistants at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta perform these treatments dozens of times every day. But as with any medical treatment, doctors have found many other beneficial ways to use facial fillers as well – and some of them may surprise you.
Acne Scars
Acne scars come in many forms, and while chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments can work wonders for mild scarring, severe scars need a little something extra. Depressed (or atrophic) scars happen when your body produces too little scar tissue to replace the damaged skin. For deep acne scars, our dermatologists achieve powerful results with minimally invasive surgical techniques to release the scar tissue that’s pulling the surface skin down, then using facial fillers to fill in the space underneath.
Hollow Temples
As we age, we lose fat and other tissue in our face, and the skin becomes thinner as well. This makes us look bonier and more gaunt. It’s rather well-known that dermal fillers can be used to fill in the hollows of the cheeks to produce a more youthful shape. But fewer people realize that this can be done with hollowing temples as well, adding even further to a natural-looking youthfulness.
Corners of the Lips
For some people, the corners of their lips naturally point downward while their face is resting, and this can get worse (or start to appear in people who didn’t have the problem before) with aging. In addition to facial fillers being used to plump up thin lips, they can also be placed strategically so that they turn up the corners of the mouth ever so slightly. This subtle change can produce a naturally more pleasant-looking, youthful, and refreshed look.
Hands
The hands are arguably the most forgotten area of the body when it comes to aging. Between sun exposure, movement, and the fact that they have thin skin to begin with, the hands age very quickly. As tissue is lost, the tendons, veins, and bones become more visible. But some facial fillers like Radiesse® can be very successful at turning back the clock when injected into the tops of the hands. Just be sure to have these injections performed by a qualified medical professional like a board-certified dermatologist or physician assistant, because the risk of complications is high when this procedure is performed by someone who is unqualified and inexperienced.
Chin
For patients who want a more well-proportioned face, their chin can make all the difference. Even a slight augmentation to the front of the chin can produce a stronger, slimmer-looking jawline. For patients who want a subtle enhancement to their chin but don’t need or want plastic surgery, facial fillers can sometimes be used instead. Fillers are also temporary, so they’re a great way for a patient to try the look and see if it does what they envisioned it would do.
It can be truly fascinating to learn about the latest medical treatments and the innovative ways they’re being used. But remember, even quick procedures like filler injections have an impact on your health, so keep your safety in mind above all. Only receive facial filler injections from a board-certified medical professional who has extensive experience performing injections in the area you’re interested in and a sterile, safe medical environment. For an in-depth consultation about how dermal fillers may be able to help you, schedule an appointment at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. 2017 is almost over, and it’s certainly been one for the books at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. We’ve been serving the Atlanta area for 40 years, and every year brings a thrilling line-up of medical advances and exciting changes. 2017 is no exception, so we’re looking back on some of the practice’s best moments of the year:
Best Self Best of 2017 Contest
Each year, Best Self magazine takes a reader poll to identify the favorite providers for a variety of health and wellness-related fields, from plastic surgeons to yoga instructors. For the second year in a row, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta was thrilled to be named Atlanta’s Best Dermatology Practice Overall! On top of this practice-wide honor, our own Dr. Ashley Curtis also received the title of Best Women’s Thinning Hair Treatment Provider for her work at our Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss. Thank you to all our patients who nominated and voted for us!
New Treatments and Specials
This year has been full of innovation and advancement in the medical field, and we’re thrilled to bring so many new choices to our patients, including:
Eczema Center
This year, we had the joy of opening our own specialty center for eczema, allergies, and other skin sensitivities. This specialty center focuses on needle-free patch testing to determine what allergens and irritants are triggering patients’ skin symptoms. Once we determine your unique triggers, we can help you develop a skin care plan catered to your needs and goals.
Microneedling for Hair Growth
For patients who are in the earlier stages of hair loss, one of many nonsurgical options is microneedling. This procedure uses short, ultrafine needles to restore health and vitality to the hair follicles and surrounding tissue. For maximum effectiveness, it is often combined with natural growth factors.
New Hair Transplant Surgery Technology
For patients who seek the more comprehensive results of hair transplant surgery, 2017 improved the process for them as well. Our specialty center, The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research, now offers an advanced new system (one of several choices for FUE hair transplants) that more precisely extracts healthy hair follicles for transplant. The result is a more efficient surgery with smoother results.
New Facial Fillers
Facial fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® have long been a popular choice for wrinkle reduction. This year, both brands came out with beneficial new fillers. Juvéderm® released their new Vollure™ XC, a longer-lasting hyaluronic acid filler for wrinkles around the mouth and nose. Restylane® released Restylane® Refyne™, which offers more flexible molecules so patients can maintain a more natural feel while reducing their wrinkles.
PicoSure® for Skin Rejuvenation
PicoSure® is a popular laser for tattoo removal, and we’ve been using the equioment at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta for years. But they recently released a new lens array that allows the laser to reduce sun damage and restore a more youthful look to the skin, too. It’s successful for nearly any area of the body, and it offers great results without the recovery time of most other laser procedures.
LunulaLaser® for Nail Fungus
Until now, nail fungus has been notoriously difficult to treat because the fungi typically needs to be targeted underneath the nail, and so the nail gets in the way. LunulaLaser®, however, is an advanced laser that penetrates through the nail to noninvasively treat the fungi at its source. It’s more effective than topical treatments yet with fewer side effects than oral medications.
Scalp Micropigmentation
Micropigmentation is a very precise, tattoo-like process that can be used to disguise lightened scar tissue, stretch marks, and other areas by mimicking the color of your natural skin. At The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research, our trained micropigmentation specialist offers this treatment for the scalp. It can be used to disguise scars from hair transplant surgery, injuries, or other surgeries. Or, for patients with thinning hair, micropigmentation can also be used to make your hair appear fuller.
SilkPeel® Dermalinfusion®
SilkPeel® is a unique treatment that takes traditional microdermabrasion a step further. On top of exfoliating away the damaged surface skin (microdermabrasion), SilkPeel® simultaneously uses suction to clear out dead skin cells and other debris and also infuses the skin with specialized topical medication. This process is helpful for acne, sun damage, fine lines, acne scars, and just a dull or uneven complexion that could use some brightening.

Imagine a world where the fountain of youth was a pre-packaged product that could keep you looking perpetually young and vibrant. The providers of Dermatology Associates of Atlanta have extensive experience treating patients of all ages for a variety of skin conditions and often meet with patients to find a customized daily skin care routine to help them achieve and maintain healthy-looking skin. While this mythical elixir doesn’t actually exist, there is comfort in knowing that there are daily practices that you can incorporate into your routine to keep your skin looking healthier as you age.
Practice sun-smart behavior. Aging skin can be largely contributed to long-term sun exposure. By wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, not only will you minimize the chances of pre-mature wrinkles but also the development of skin cancer. Try avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours between 10am and 4pm when the sun’s UV rays are strongest. If you plan on being outdoors, apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before, reapply frequently and wear a wide-brimmed hat to further protect your face.
Cigarettes are not skin friendly. Smoking is a habit that leaves many visible signs of aging to make you appear older than you actually are. The oxygen and important nutrients needed to maintain healthy skin are depleted when you smoke and can make the skin appear dehydrated and dull. Continuous puckering of the lips can cause wrinkles to appear around your mouth and may progress faster as smoking also reduces the collagen needed to keep skin smooth and tight. Certain cosmetic injectables and facial fillers, such as BOTOX® or Juvéderm®, address fine lines, wrinkles and areas of lost volume in the face, but continuing to smoke will deprive your skin of the necessary nutrients and cause it to age more rapidly.
Be kind to your skin. Your skin cells continuously regenerate, even when we are sleeping. Wash your face daily, even before bed, to remove makeup, dirt and bacteria. Gently wash your skin; vigorous scrubbing won’t make it any cleaner and may cause irritation. Using a cleanser or mild soap helps minimize irritation for sensitive skin and applying a daily moisturizer protects your skin from drying out and looking dull. Keep in mind the golden rules of shaving; use a clean razor and shave in the direction the hair is growing. Soften the hair with warm water to avoid irritation and remember to never shave dry!
Healthy skin happens from the inside out. Not getting enough sleep can cause under-eye bags to become visible adding to a tired appearance that makes your skin look older. Getting adequate sleep can reduce stress caused by fatigue and can reduce the potential for acne break-outs. It is recommended that you get at least seven hours of sleep daily. Regular exercise also contributes to stress reduction and promotes collagen growth which is key to maintaining youthful skin by increasing circulation and promoting new cell production. Balancing sleep and exercise with a healthy diet in which you incorporate fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteinsalso contributes to maintaining vibrant skin.
As with any skin care regimen, give it time. Sometimes the best results are gradual and aren’t immediately visible, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t working. Annual skin examinations and discussing skin care routines with your board-certified dermatologist will allow you to plan the best treatment plan to address any concerns you may have with your skin.
