Unfortunately, some of our patients at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) have focused so much on anti-aging for the face that they forget how easily the neck and chin can give away their age. Laser Treatments
Fractional laser skin resurfacing is one of the most effective ways to revitalize aging skin. The procedure uses specialized lasers to remove damaged surface skin while stimulating collagen to make the fresh skin emerge to be firmer and more youthful. Both Fraxel® and DOT Therapy use variations of this method, but for an even less invasive way to rejuvenate your skin with lasers, we also offer PicoSure® skin rejuvenaton. What is “submental fullness?”
The words “submental fullness” and “submental fat” appear all over the Kybella® research, and these terms simply refer to excess fat under the chin. While it may appear as the result of weight gain, simple genetics can cause people to carry more weight under their chin than in other areas, and aging can contribute to the problem as well. Fat in this area can be particularly stubborn and resistant to diet and exercise, so Kybella® injections target these fat cells directly.
How does Kybella® work?
The injection is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid—a naturally-occurring solution your body uses to break down dietary fat. When it’s injected directly into the fat under the chin, this acid destroys the fat cells in the area so that they can no longer store fat. As a result, the fat they were storing is flushed out through your body’s natural processes, and you’re left with a slimmer profile.
Is Kybella® fat reduction safe?
Kybella® has been FDA-approved as safe and effective for reducing submental fat. However, it’s important to note that this is only true when the injection is used properly by a fully trained professional. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, our very own Dr. Edmond Griffin and Kathryn Filipek, PA-C are both board-certified medical professionals who have been trained by Kybella® themselves to perform the procedure safely and successfully (and in fact, were among the first in Atlanta to become qualified to use Kybella®).
How long do Kybella results last?
Once fat cells are destroyed, they will not return, so the results of Kybella® are expected to be long-lasting. However, keep in mind that the surrounding fat cells are still able to accumulate fat, so it’s important to maintain a healthy weight in order to keep your slender look and results will vary from person to person.

Kybella™ Fat Reduction for the Chin
We encourage every patient to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen, but one area of the body that’s particularly stubborn is the chin. Excess fat can develop as the result of genetics, aging, and weight fluctuations, but until Kybella™, the only way to target these fat cells was with surgical liposuction. Kybella™ is an injection that breaks down the fat cells in the chin so that they can no longer store fat. Each session consists of a series of injections into the targeted area. While patients can require up to six treatments, the slimmer and more youthful results are expected to be long-lasting.
Restylane® Lyft
One of the most popular aesthetic procedures we perform is facial rejuvenation with dermal fillers. Also known as facial fillers, these injections smooth wrinkles by replacing facial volume that has been lost with age. While most dermal fillers are best used around the mouth and nose area, Restylane® Lyft is unique because it’s also FDA-approved to add volume to the cheeks, giving the face a lifted, rejuvenated, and natural look. Restylane® Lyft also includes lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to maximize patient comfort while creating results that can last up to a year. Radiesse® for Hands
Like Restylane® Lyft, Radiesse® is a dermal filler that adds youthful volume. However, Radiesse® is unique because not only does it stimulate the body’s natural ability to produce collagen (the protein that gives young skins its firmness and elasticity), but it’s now the first and only FDA-approved product for hand rejuvenation. The hands age more quickly than nearly any other area of the body because they tend to sustain a lot of sun exposure. The skin on the back of the hands is also particularly thin, so when aging causes it to lose volume, wrinkles and sagging skin form rather quickly. Radiesse® injections are a minimally invasive way to restore youth to the hands, and results can last up to a year before retreatment is needed.
FOCUS™ Lens Array for PicoSure®
The PicoSure® laser is known for its ability to remove even stubborn tattoos. The new FOCUS™ Lens Array now extends PicoSure®’s abilities into the facial rejuvenation realm as well. The lens array causes the laser light to focus on treating the deeper layers of the skin in order to rebuild collagen and to give the skin a youthful glow. The treatment sessions can effectively minimize fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and pigmented skin spots throughout several areas of the face, as well as the hands and the arms for some patients.
