According to study by Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and the Laser and Skin Cancer Center of Indiana, the number of non-cosmetic and cosmetic procedures performed by dermatologists is on the rise. Data from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) showed an estimated 7.6 million procedures performed in 2007 – a 120 percent increase from 2001. The procedures that attributed to this rise the most were soft tissue augmentation which increased 405 percent, Botox® injections which increased 324 percent, non-ablative skin rejuvenation using lasers and light which increased 330 percent, and skin cancer surgeries which increased 85 percent.

While some of this can be attributed to the baby boomer generation advancing into their 40’s and 50’s – researchers also attribute this rise to advances in dermatological specialties.
