New Survey Shows 22% Spike in Skin Cancer, Cosmetic Procedures in 2013
According to statistics recently released by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), medically necessary and cosmetic procedures were performed by dermatologic surgeons 22% more in 2013 than they were in 2012. Within the survey, many procedures and treatments performed at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta topped the list.
In fact, the survey reports increases were seen across the board, including liposuction, chemical peels, wrinkle injections and more.
Increasing 13% from 2012 but remaining the leading procedures, skin cancer treatments were the most widely performed surgery by dermatologic surgeons. ASDS members performed 3.04 million skin cancer treatments in 2013. Of these, nearly 190,000 were for melanoma, a 27% jump over 2012. Treatments for non-melanoma cancers heightened by 12%. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most prevalent of all types of cancers. It is estimated that more than one million Americans develop skin cancer every year.
