The providers at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta offer BOTOX® & Dysport® injections that are effective for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the upper portion of the face.

About Botox®

In 1973, BOTOX® was initially used as a treatment for patients with crossed eyes. By relaxing the overactive eye muscles, this medicine provided an alternative to surgery. After this “breakthrough,” BOTOX® quickly gained acceptance for other ophthalmologic disorders including nystagmus and blepharospasm (involuntary spasm of the eyelids). Extensive BOTOX® research repeatedly confirmed a high success rate with minimal side effects using minuscule amounts of this new-found “medicine.”

botox-diamond-injector-atlanta-georgiaFast forward to today, Botox® has become a popular cosmetic procedure because it is safe and patients love the results. Botox® uses a derivative of the powerful medicine botulism to relax facial muscles in order to help treat the appearance of fine lines caused by expression or constant movement. Botox® was FDA-approved in April 2002 for cosmetic use to temporarily treat moderate to severe frown lines.

About Dysport®

In addition to offering Botox® treatments, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta also offers Dysport®. Dysport® was approved by the FDA in June of 2009 as another botulinum-A treatment proven to reduce wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Similar to Botox, results from Dysport® can last 3 months. Dysport may potentially offer faster results, meaning even less downtime than the already minimal downtime demanded of BOTOX®.*

Dysport® also requires a higher level of technical skill to administer, meaning those who offer it are going to be well-versed in the anatomy and muscles of the face and overall, more skilled with cosmetic injections. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, our highly trained board-certified dermatologists and physician assistants routinely perform thousands of cosmetic injections annually.

Treatable Areas:

FOREHEAD WRINKLES
Botox® and Dysport® can both be used to treat wrinkles in the upper portion of the face. By relaxing the muscles in this area, these treatments can smooth the skin and refresh the appearance for both men and women.

CROW’S FEET

Wrinkles radiating from the corner of the eyes caused by smiling, laughing or squinting (known as “crow’s feet”) can be especially distressing to some individuals. Thankfully, all three of these injectable treatments can be used to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet. They can also work in tandem with laser resurfacing treatments for even more comprehensive results.

FROWN LINES

Both of these treatments can effectively treat moderate to severe frown lines that occur between the eyebrows.

BOTOX® & DYSPORT® NEUROMODULATOR® FAQS

dysport in atlanta ga
What should be expected after a BOTOX® or Dysport® treatment?

BOTOX® & DYSPORT® are safe treatments. None of the three pose any serious post-treatment risks or side effects. Some minor bruising or soreness may occur in the injection area, but these effects are temporary. No downtime for recovery will be required and the results should begin to be visible by two weeks of initial treatment.

How long do the results last and how often is re-injection needed?

This will depend on a number of factors including each patient’s biology, the extent of their wrinkling, how expressive they are and how many treatment sessions they have undergone. While most patients notice substantial results from their initial facial injection, a series of treatments is often recommended to achieve the best aesthetic result.

Who should not use these injectable treatments?

Although there have been no reports of birth defects with this medicine, women who are pregnant or about to become pregnant may not be treated. It is also our policy not to perform these treatments on nursing mothers. Patients with a history of neuromuscular disease (multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis) or other types of diseases involving neurotransmission should avoid these treatments. Additionally, patients currently taking aminoglycoside antibiotics, penicillamine and calcium channel blockers, and certain blood-thinning medications should not undergo these treatments. We will discuss this in more detail during the pre-treatment consultation.

What unexpected benefits have come from the use of BOTOX®?

Tension headaches have disappeared for some patients. These headaches occurred in patients who were recruiting forehead and brow muscles during periods of stress and tension. When these muscles were relaxed, the headaches faded.

How painful are the injections?

The smallest needles are used and the medicine itself does not sting as much as the local anesthetic. Discomfort can be minimized by the use of a cold compress, cooling the skin just prior to injections as well as after.

Is there anything I can do after my injections to help my treatment be more effective and avoid side effects?

First, do not massage the area of the injection. Second, do not lie down for a nap; keep upright to keep blood flowing.
