About Hair Restoration and Research

Request an appointment

Hair loss affects millions of people across the globe and has many potential causes. Our dedicated providers and at hair loss specialty centers The Center of Hair Restoration and Research and The Center for Women’s Hair Loss are at the forefront of hair loss research and restoration for men, women, and even children.

The first step in hair restoration is to identify the cause of hair loss. After an initial evaluation and diagnosis, our hair restoration treatment providers work with each patient to educate them on the various treatment options available and provide all the information needed to make a comfortable decision about how to proceed. Our team will work with you to design your personalized treatment plan.

Hair Restoration Treatment

Thanks to advancing technology and research, there are many non-surgical treatment options to slow hair loss and enhance hair growth. Our providers can offer you these options and more:

Microneedling with Natural Growth Factors – One way to address thinning hair is to stimulate the hair follicles to make them more active. We can do this by using a popular microneedling procedure combined with your own natural growth factors. That combination nourishes and stimulates your follicles so they can start producing more hair.

Red Light Therapy – Stimulating and revitalizing your hair follicles is key when it comes to treating hair loss without surgery. With red light therapy, we do this non-invasively by sending a precise wavelength of light into your scalp. This restores more health and activity in your follicles.

Topical Medication – Topical medications Rogaine® (2% minoxidil) and Extra-Strength Rogaine® (5% minoxidil) provide effective treatment in slowing down the balding process. Most effective for patients in the beginning stages of hair loss, with consistent daily use Rogaine® helps keep existing hair and promotes hair regrowth, making Rogaine® a beneficial non-surgical option for many patients. Another effective option for some patients is AQ Advanced Hair Complex, a topical serum which uses growth factors to restore and regenerate healthy hair follicles.

Finasteride (Proscar®/Propecia®) – Originally used to treat male pattern baldness, this FDA-approved oral medication has led to 30-40% hair regrowth among patients in addition to decreasing the hair loss process. When combined with daily usage of Rogaine®, finasteride showed even better results.

Viviscal® Professional – This unique oral supplement features a blend of nutrients, vitamins, and amino acids to nourish the follicles, leading to fuller, thicker hair. Results are typically seen within three to six months.

Scalp Micropigmentation – Micropigmentation is similar to a very intricate and specific type of tattooing. Our trained micropigmentation specialist will place permanent ink in a precise way on your scalp to mimic the look of hair growth or “stubble.” This makes your hair look fuller and more consistent.

Scar Camouflaging with Scalp Micropigmentation – Scarring in the scalp can be particularly noticeable because there are no hair follicles in scar tissue, so it becomes very clear when there is a line or area in the scalp with no hair growth and no “stubble.” Our scar camouflaging involves using a customized blend of pigments to make a light-colored scar blend in with the color of the natural skin.

Regenerative Cell Therapy for Hair Loss – XoGlo® by Kimera Labs is a non-surgical hair loss treatment for both men and women. Administered using microneedling, this treatment helps regenerate and regrow hair by using regenerative cell therapy technology to deliver over a thousand growth factor proteins to the scalp per treatment. This non-surgical procedure is performed in office and has very little discomfort with little to no expected downtime.

Cosmetics – Colored sprays, rub-on dyes, and tattoos of the scalp are options used to camouflage hair loss.

Hairpiece – For instant hair loss coverage, hairpieces effectively provide dense, thick coverage. High-quality wigs offer painless coverage and can be secured to the hair by clips, weaves, snaps, surgical rings, glue, or tape.

Hair Restoration FAQs

What causes hair loss?
The most common cause of hair loss is due to genetics. However, there are many causes of hair loss including certain medications, illnesses, and trauma. Our providers at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta offer precise expertise in finding the cause of your hair loss and providing the ideal treatment plan for your needs.

Is hair loss the same in men and women?
Generally speaking, no. While some treatments for hair retention and restoration can work on both genders, different patients’ hair loss can have different causes. For instance, nearly all men who lose their hair have male pattern baldness, whereas women have a higher likelihood that their hair loss is also influenced by non-genetic factors, like hormonal changes, medications, scarring, illnesses, or certain medications. This is the reason for our Center for Women’s Hair Loss – to provide women with more specialized and comprehensive hair loss treatment.
