Menopause, and its many stages, can be a challenging time for women. Most notably, menopause (and even pre-menopause) is a period that is defined by change. Changes to your body. Changes to your hormones. And changes to your skin, hair, and nails are absolutely part of this process. Menopause technically begins 12 months after a woman experiences her final menstrual period, but the process has different phases that all have their own unique effects. These effects are triggered by fluctuating levels of the female hormone estrogen that are produced by the body.
These effects can be quite wide-ranging, and can take a toll on the appearance and health of a person’s skin, hair, and nails. Thankfully, our board-certified dermatologists, physician assistants, and other dermatological providers have many years of experience diagnosing and treating these effects.
How Menopause Affects The Skin
The effects of menopause on a person’s skin can be vast. They include the following:
- Hormonal acne breakouts due to fluctuating hormone levels
- Sagging and loose skin (as well as the development of wrinkles) due to a decrease in natural collagen production
- Overly dry, itchy, or flaky skin due to the skin losing its natural ability to retain moisture over time
- The appearance of age spots
- Excessive underarm sweating
We offer a full selection of skin care services and products for patients who experience these kinds of issues after menopause. Depending on the specific symptoms and their severity, our skin care experts may recommend a wide variety of treatment options, ranging from facials, chemical peels and microneedling, to cosmetic laser treatments and miraDry® sweat reduction treatments. We even carry over 100 different products to fit the needs of just about any skin type. Some more mild cases may only require prescription medication compounds, but we will present and discuss all options during the initial consultation appointment.
How Menopause Affects The Hair
Estrogen is important for growing and maintaining thick, healthy hair. So when menopause starts and estrogen production decreases, many people experience noticeable hair thinning, shedding, or even considerable hair loss. This can accelerate the symptoms of androgenic alopecia (male or female-pattern baldness) and considerable thinning and the appearance of bald spots as well.
At our Center for Women’s Hair Loss, our experts specialize in finding the root cause of your hair loss and hair thinning in order to develop unique treatment plans for each patient. Treatment options may include prescription medication plans (oral and/or topical), laser therapies, scalp micropigmentation, and more.
In addition to hair loss and thinning, unwanted facial hair can begin to grow due to a lack of estrogen in the body. This hair can sprout on the upper lip or chin in some cases. In these cases, we may recommend hair removal using electrolysis or laser hair removal as a safe, dependable, and long-term solution.
How Menopause Affects The Nails
After menopause, fingernails and toenails can also experience changes. It’s natural for nails to become dry and brittle during this time. Other symptoms may include the development of cracks or splitting, as well as a change in nail color. These symptoms can occur as a result of hormonal imbalances or a lack of essential vitamins in the body.
In these cases, we highly recommend keeping your hands and feet moisturized, and if issues persist, we can help develop a customized treatment plan that may include topical medications, laser treatments, and more.

Menopause Treatments Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum age required to undergo a certain menopause treatment?
No. Menopause affects different people at different ages, and premature or early menopause does happen. As long as our dermatology providers confirm that the patient is a good candidate to safely undergo a specific course of treatment, age is no restriction.
Can these treatments help men who are experiencing age related cosmetic issues?
While men’s bodies don’t go through the same kind of shifts that are associated with menopause, male hormone levels (testosterone) do decrease with age and some of the effects that we’ve discussed do apply to men as well. Especially hair loss/thinning, loose skin, nail issues, and age spots. And yes, we can absolutely use these treatments to help men experiencing these issues.
