PicoSure® Skin Rejuvenation
at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta
Looking younger is one of the most common goals among our cosmetic dermatology patients, and the PicoSure® laser is a newer and more advanced way to achieve it. PicoSure® has been known for its great success in laser tattoo removal, but with the release of the new FOCUS™ Lens Array, PicoSure® can now be used to reduce age spots and freckles as well as fine lines, wrinkles, and even scars on both the face and the body.
Most lasers for skin rejuvenation use heat to activate the healing process. While this is successful, it involves some discomfort and requires some recovery time before patients can use make-up and return to work or their other daily activities. But PicoSure® is different. Instead of using heat, it works by sending extremely short pulses of a specific wavelength of light. This high amount of energy breaks up the pigment particles that make up age spots, allowing your body to naturally absorb and remove them.
In addition to breaking up the unwanted pigments, PicoSure® will also simulate the natural healing process in your skin. This causes your body to develop more collagen and elastin, two proteins which make your skin firmer and smoother. This diminishes fine lines and wrinkles, and particularly when combined with the age spot reduction, offers an overall more youthful appearance.
When the results that PicoSure® achieves are attractive to patients on their own, one of the primary benefits of this procedure is the lack of recovery time. Patients generally only experience a few hours of redness after their treatment, but there is no need to change their daily routine or take time off work.

Frequently Asked Questions about PicoSure® Skin Rejuvenation
What areas of the face and body can PicoSure® treat?
While the most popular area patients receive PicoSure® skin revitalization is on the face and neck, the procedure can be successful for essentially any area of the body.
How many PicoSure® treatments will I need for skin rejuvenation?
Every patient is unique, and your course of treatment will be tailored to your specific needs and cosmetic goals. But generally, you can expect to have between two and five sessions for optimal results.
What is the difference between PicoSure® and laser resurfacing (such as our DOT™ or Fraxel® lasers) for skin rejuvenation?
Laser skin resurfacing (as well as fractionated laser skin resurfacing) can be a highly successful way to achieve a younger look, but it is does require some recovery time because it actually clears away damaged surface skin. PicoSure®, on the other hand, focuses less on removing tissue and more on breaking down pigment while stimulating collagen.
Does PicoSure® skin rejuvenation hurt?
Because it uses short, high-energy pulses rather than true heat, PicoSure® treatments are very comfortable. Different areas of the body may be more sensitive than others, and the experience will vary from one patient to another as well, so most patients choose to have a topical numbing cream applied around 30 minutes before their treatment in order to maximize their comfort.
How long will my PicoSure® skin revitalization treatment last?
The length of your appointments will vary based on the size of your treatment area, but for a patient who is having their full face treated, each session often only lasts around 15 minutes.
